The Athens National Observatory's Meteorology Service announced on Monday that nearly 103,000 thunderbolts had struck Greece in the month of July.

Recorded by the Observatory’s Zeus system, the number of thunderbolts is the highest activity of this type of electric phenomena in the last 14 years.

Currently, July 2018 holds the record in thunderbolt occurrence (102,944), followed by July 2009 (83,373).

According to data released, some years have an extremely low electric activity, as in 2007, when Greece was under the influence of high barometric pressure and heatwaves from Africa that brought very high temperatures and drought.
