Eleven people dead in Greece after being infected with West Nile Virus

The disease control centre has confirmed another six people have died in Greece this week from the West Nile Virus, raising the week's toll to 11.

It added that all cases reported so far, from January 1 to August 22, total 107.

The age of infected individuals ranges from 11 years to 94, but the average is 71 years, the center said.

Of those 107 cases, 88 exhibited symptoms of encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis, and the remaining 19 had mild symptoms, such as high fever.

The center said cases had been reported from several areas in Greece, especially the Athens and Piraeus metropolitan areas, Evia, areas of Macedonia, and Rethymno on Crete. "We expect more cases to be reported in the near future from more areas," the center said.
