Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced a reshuffle of his government on Tuesday, keeping key ministers in place while bringing in some new faces. Tsipras' new cabinet contains only minor changes, including new ministers for the interior, public order, justice and culture.
Key members of the Greek government, including those involved in the country's creditor-mandated bailout program such as Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos, have retained their positions in a cabinet reshuffle. As expected, Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and Defense Minister Panos Kammenos, Tsipras's coalition partner, also kept their posts.
The reshuffle included 13 new faces. The key changes were the shift of deputy defence minister Fotis Kouvelis to Shipping Minister and the inclusion of independent MP and former conservative party cadre Katerina Papakosta as deputy citizens' protection minister under Olga Gerovassili.
Gerovassili was replaced as Administrative Reform Minister by former socialist minister Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou.
Among the new names included Michalis Kalogirou as Justice Minister, replacing Stavros Kontonis, and Alexis Haritsis as interior minister.
The next general election has to take place by September 2019. Tsipras's governing Syriza party is trailing New Democracy in opinion polls.
