Syrian Greek Orthodox Christians gather to celebrate Panagia

Photos have emerged of hundreds of Syrian Greek Orthodox Christians, gathered in the town of Kafroun to celebrate the Feast of the Virgin Mary on the 15th of August.

Kafroun is a Syrian village in the Tartous Governorate, whose inhabitants are predominantly Greek Orthodox Christians.

The commemoration of the Virgin Mary was held on top of the Jabal al-Saideh mountain.

According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), al-Kafrun had a population of 485 in the 2004 census. Its inhabitants are predominantly Greek Orthodox Christians.

It is well known in the area for the annual festival of Virgin Mary to be celebrated on 15 August.
