Naxos set to break world record by cooking 600 kilos of Tiganites Patates

Locals in Naxos have spent the last few days peeling and cutting their famous potatoes as producers of the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives on the island today, 1st of September will be attempting break the world Guinness book of records again this year by cooking the largest amount of tiganites patates (fried potatoes) weighing 600 kilos.

The event is taking place today, September 1st at 5pm coinciding with the 9th Annual Potato Festival on the island, which is renowned for its delicious potatoes.

To achieve this record, at least two and a half tons of potatoes, 800 litres of Naxos olive oil and of course, many volunteers who are attempt to break last year’s record of 550 kilos of potatoes.

"Naxos potato is a product that deserves a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Last year we fried 554 kg and this year we will go even higher. We will make one portion of fried potatoes weighing 600 kilos, which we will then offer to the visitors of the island," said President of Naxos Association of Agricultural Cooperatives, Dimitris Kapounis.

“Anyone who has tried fried Naxos potatoes already knows why we want to serve so many fried potatoes to visitors at the Festival. Quite simply, because their taste is incomparable!" added Dimitri.

More than 200 families are engaged in the cultivation of the famous potato of Naxos.

Each year 8000 tonnes are produced on the island.

The potatoes of Naxos along with other agricultural produce and their cheese products have made Naxos the largest rural producer of the Cyclades and the South Aegean.
