A Greek coroner has ruled that Australian Instagram model Sinead McNamara who was found unconscious and tangled in ropes at the back of a superyacht in Kefalonia, died from hanging.

Her body is due to be flown back to Australia on Tuesday, five days after her body was spotted on the back deck of the $190 million 'Mayan Queen IV', where she had been working as a crew member.

Ms. McNamara, 20, was reportedly working her final shift onboard the superyacht as it sat docked at Argostoli when she tragically died.

A local coroner who carried out the autopsy confirmed to media the cause of Sinead’s death was hanging but added that results from additional tests could take months to come back.

The captain of another superyacht discovered Sinead’s body and said he tried desperately to save her.

The coroner revealed he had advised Ms. McNamara's mother and sister not to go to the morgue, saying it would be very difficult 'to see her in such bad state'.

Police and paramedics tried to save Ms. McNamara and she was flown to a hospital in Athens.

The Mayan Queen IV finally left the port on Monday night after being detained by local authorities until the crime scene had been examined.

All crew members, which were 23 in total, were reportedly onboard as it departed, however, the boat's owner Alberto Baillères, a Mexican mining magnate, was not on board the ship at the time of Sinead's death.

Just two weeks before her death, Sinead posted a message on her IG account saying, “My head is all over the shop today. Take me back to this where my only worry was not cracking my skull open,” she wrote adding an image of herself on a quad bike, with reports suggesting it was suicide.
