Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Crete

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is visiting the town of Chania today where he will meet with officials.

The PM’s first meeting scheduled at 10am is with the regional governor, the vice-governor and mayors of the Prefecture of Chania followed by a visit to the TOMY of Chania.

After completing his program in the city, Alexis Tsipras will visit the town of Kandanos, where he will lay a wreath in memory of the victims of the Nazi occupation.

The town of Kandanos and its surrounding area suffered particularly badly from German occupation during World War II. During the Battle of Crete, resistance fighters had held advancing German soldiers for two days, preventing them from reaching Palaiochora to secure it.

In retribution the occupiers razed the village to the ground and erected a sign: "Here stood Kandanos, destroyed in retribution for the murder of 25 German soldiers, never to be rebuilt again."
