Doctors are urging parents to avoid co-sleeping with their infants after a 5-month-old baby girl was pronounced dead after she spent the night sharing a bed with her mother in a Children’s Hospital in Patras, while her oldest brother was being treated for an illness.

The mother had taken the infant with her as she had nowhere else to leave her daughter and when she woke up in the morning she realised something was seriously wrong as the baby was blue in the face and not breathing. She immediately yelled and doctors and nurses tried hard to resuscitate, the baby girl but were not able to bring her back to life.

"As I got up to go to the toilet and looked to see if she was awake so I can feed her, I saw that she looked bruised and was cold,” the heartbroken mother told ANT1 news.

"I went to the hospital in the morning to see my family and was told that my daughter had died in her mum’s arms, we are devastated,” he said.

Coroner Andreas Gotsis said in his statements to Greek media that necropsy results show that the infant was not injured, nor was there any evidence of mistreatment, adding that sudden death seemed to be the cause.
