Greek government to hire another 15,000 teachers

Greece’s Education Minister Costas Gavroglou announced on Tuesday the placement of a total of 15,000 teachers for public schools by 2022.

The Minister said they will all be hired as permanent placements although the manner of their appointment is still to be worked out.

Gavroglou noted that 4,500 teachers would be appointed to positions in special education in the next academic year (2019-2020), 5,250 teachers will be  appointed in 2020-21, and 5,250 in 2021-22.

The minister invited teachers' unions to submit proposals on how to appoint these teachers, but added that the distribution among grade levels and specialities would be based on immediate needs.

The appointments are "a step in the further upgrading of our educational system, especially in primary and secondary education," he said.
