Gail force winds cause havoc on the Aegean Sea

Port authorities in Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio have extended the ban on sailing due to gale-force winds in the Aegean Sea reaching up to 9 and 10 Beaufort in places.

In a late afternoon update on Wednesday, authorities said that there is still no hydrofoil service in the Argosaronic Islands (which include Aegina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses).

Of conventional ferries, the Perama-Paloukia line is shut down, and ferry services for Arkitsa-Aidipsos, Rio-Antirrio, Prinos-Kavala and Alexandroupoli-Samothraki remain are suspended.

The Keramoti-Thasos line is operating normally, while the Volos-Sporades Islands line is serviced only by conventional ferries.

Since yesterday morning, very strong winds have been blowing almost all over the country and especially in the Aegean Sea, making it difficult for all ferry services.

The Superferry crew of Golden Star Ferries fought against high waves and winds until they finally tied to the harbor of Tinos on Wednesday and there will be no ferries arriving or departing Santorini for the next few days.

This comes as Greece had its first snowfall of the season falling in the mountains of northern and central Greece at altitudes above 1,800 metres.
