Police authorities in the Municipality of Thessaloniki moved in on an incomplete apartment block to remove illegal immigrants who had transformed it into a makeshift camp.

The orders for their removal were authorised by a court following complaints from the public.

More than twenty foreigners have been so far detained by police.

"The place is known as a living space of immigrants and it is estimated to be occupied by anywhere between 70-100 people. The situation is tragic for both people living there and the surrounding neighbourhood. The living conditions are of great concern as they pose a public health risk. We hope to find a permanent solution so that we do not have such places in our city where human souls are stacked like this, "said Lazaros Zachariades, Commissioner for cleaning and recycling, Municipality of Thessaloniki.
