Police authorities on the island of Lesvos have stood down one police officer and recalled another three pending an investigation into their alleged mistreatment of an elderly migrant woman.

The officers appear in a video posted online where they are seen behaving inappropriately towards the woman at the Moria Reception and Identification Centre on Lesvos.

According to Chief of Police Lieutenant General Aristidis Andrikopoulos, the police officers have been recalled back to their respective services in Attica, Ioannina and Edessa by order, while an internal inquiry is underway to investigate whether their actions were in any way racist.

In the video the suspended officer is shown verbally abusing the foreign national, while a decision to suspend the remaining three will be made based on the findings of the internal inquiry.
