WELL-BEING

Now there's more reason to drink Greek coffee every day

Recent research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, by Spanish scientist Maria-Paz de Peña and her colleagues, highlights once again why Greek coffee has enormous amounts of health benefits.

The team of researchers found that above all, Greek coffee is the richest in polyphenols, which helps to clean the arteries, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

The University of Athens Medical School has also revealed that Greek coffee can help with longevity.

Greek scientists made this discovery when they were investigating locals from the Greek island of Ikaria, as most inhabitants of this famous island live beyond the age of 90. After testing other factors, the researchers found that one thing that differentiates Ikarians is their habit of drinking Greek coffee on a daily basis.

In fact, 87% of those who took part in the research consumed 3-4 cups a day. The privilege of longevity, however, was not found in people who drank other types of coffee.

Greek coffee seems to improve endothelial function, according to researchers. Endothelial cells pass through the blood vessels and help to control inflammation, blood pressure, clotting and transport of materials and white blood cells inside and outside the system.

People who drank Greek coffee had better endothelial function than others, and it seemed to be even among those who had high blood pressure. Boiled Greek coffee, which is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants and contains only a modest amount of caffeine, is the only coffee known to have as many health benefits.
