Zakynthos island moves 3cm after strong earthquake

The island of Zakynthos has moved at least 3 cm to the southwest after the strong earthquake that measured 6.8 on the Richter scale that shook the island early on Friday, October 25 and was felt across Greece and even in parts of Italy, Malta, and Albania.

The research director at the Geodynamics Institute of the Athens National Observatory, Dr. Athanassios Ganas, told ANA that this conclusion was reached after the digital processing and analysis of radar-images taken by the EU and ESA satellite Sentinel-1 of the Copernicus service, which reflects the surface deformation on Zakynthos.

The movement is mostly observed on a horizontal level, while no vertical movement has been observed. Ganas said that scientists are currently examining if the quake has caused other movements in the surrounding region.
