The Hellenic Medical Society awarded this year’s Papanikolaou Prize to Greek clinical researcher, Myria Galazi who works at St. Bartholomew's hospital in London.
Galazi was awarded the 2018 Papanikolaou Prize in recognition for her research on the metastatic prostate cancer.
The event took place at the Greek Centre of London where four candidates for the award presented their researches to the public and afterwards a special committee of scientists chose the winner.
Scientists with research works in the area of medicine, dentistry and biomedicine participated in the competition.
To participate in the competition, candidates must be 38 years or younger and below Consultant or Senior Scientist status, or the equivalent in other areas. They should be members or eligible for membership of the Hellenic Medical Society, UK.
The Prize is named after famed medical scientist Georgios Nikolaou Papanikolaou, a Greek pioneer in cytopathology and early cancer detection, and the inventor of the "Pap smear".
