According to the Hellenic Civic Aviation Administration (HCAA), there are currently 21 Greek airlines in operation with a fleet of 485 aircraft.
The largest carriers are AEGEAN Airlines, Olympic Air, Sky Express, Ellinair, and Thessaloniki based Astra Airlines.
The HCAA has divided the airlines into two categories: those with planes of maximum take-off mass of over 10 tons and a capacity of more than 20 seats, and those under 10 tons with fewer than 20 seats.
There are currently 12 carriers in the first category and nine in the second.
According to the HCAA, most of the airplanes are for private use.
In July this year, AEGEAN Airways won the award for Best Regional Airline in Europe at the Skytrax World Airline Awards. The award-winning airline continued their dominance in this category winning this award for 7 consecutive years.
Last month, they were voted fifth in the ‘Best Airlines in the World’ category at the Condé Nast Traveler’s 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards, showing their dominance not only as a Greek airline but a worldwide carrier.
