The head of EU delegation in Turkey, Christian Berger claimed in an interview with Greek news agency ANA that the 2016 EU-Turkey to stem the flow of immigrants and manage the ensuing crisis has brought results with a reduction of the number of migrants and refugees flows to Greece.
Berger noted that the number of migrants and refugees that continue to lose their lives in the Aegean "has drastically dropped from 1,500 in 2015 and 2016 to only a few deaths nowadays."
In this context, Berger highlighted EU's contribution in Turkey with main axis the common agreement in March 2016 in addressing the refugee and migrant issue.
Asked if Turkey fully complies with the agreement signed with EU in 2016, the head of the EU representation in Turkey answered positively. "The Turkish authorities are working very hard to intercept the flows as well as to dismantle the smugglers' rings that transfer Syrians and other migrants to Greece.
On the number of migrants that are readmitted to Turkey from Greece according to the EU-Turkey agreement he said "You will hear from the Turkish side that they are ready to receive more people but some legal procedures should be followed. These people can object or file an appeal. The procedure should comply with the rule of law and I believe that this is happening", however we refer to a lengthy procedure.
