Athenians have officially marked the Festive Season for 2018, as the annual Christmas tree at Syntagma Square in front of the Greek Parliament was lit up last night.

The event has kicked off a series of celebrations that are on offer, free of charge, until January, the Mayor of Athens, Giorgos Kaminis, said addressing the crowd that came out to enjoy the festivities despite the rain.

"From the city's heart, here, on Syntagma square, Athens sends today, with the official illumination, a message of celebration, solidarity, and optimism. I invite you all to stroll around the city, participate in as many events as you can with your children and feel the holiday spirit," said Mayor Kaminis.

"I wish you all a Merry Christmas, health, peace, hope and Happy Holidays," added the Mayor who is serving his last term.

This year, the Greek capital will be transformed into a "city of angels," he said.
