Sydney's Little Spartans

Little Spartans from the Hellenic Martial Arts club (The Fight Lab), passed with flying colours after being graded for Pankration on the 19th of December.

Pankration comes from two Greek words, 'pan' meaning 'all' and 'kratos' meaning 'powers'. The combination of the two words is an accurate depiction of the sport, the mixture of Hellenic boxing and wrestling.

The sport has became the National Martial Art of Greece and can be traced back to 3000 BC. Not only is this sport popular in the Hellenic World, but worldwide, when it was introduced and became the most popular event in the Olympic Games.

Aged between five to ten years old, the little spartans showed off their skills and techniques, with their various movements both standing and on the ground.

Their coach, former World Champion and ‘Coach of the Year’ awarded by the International Sports Karate Association Kon Papaioannou, as well as the parents of the little spartans were very proud of their achievement, seeing future leaders and champions in the children.

Congratulations to coach Kon Papaioannou, assistant coach Michael Barrett and to the superstars: Eva Barrett, Athina Gavrilidis, Greg Gavrilidis, Peter Gianakopoulos, Anastasia Millis, Elena Millis, Katerina Papaioannou, Nicola Papaioannou, John Poulos, Kristina Poulos, Maria Poulos Jonathan Skagias and Kate Rise Skagias.
