Tesla in Greece to power ‘smart’ Greek islands

By 5 years ago

Greece’s Minister for Environment and Energy, Giorgios Stathakis, met on Tuesday with executives from American energy company Tesla.

Tesla is in Greece because it is interested in the "smart islands" and "energy islands" initiatives promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEE).

According to an announcement by the Ministry, the main topics of the meeting were the reduction of dependency on fossil fuel, especially for the islands not scheduled to join the mainland power grid in the coming years; and the gradual switch to Renewable Energy Sources (RES), as set out in the goals envisaged by the National Energy and Climate Plan.

The announcement also stressed that a significant reduction in the cost of storing and producing energy means that the switch to RES is not only environmentally useful but also economically profitable for the islands.
