Greek police authorities detained more than ten suspects over the paint attack on the US Embassy on Monday by anti-establishment group Rouvikonas.
Eight of the ten suspects were released as there was no evidence linking them to the attack while two others were placed under arrest and will be sent before a public prosecutor.
Meanwhile, the Greek Foreign Ministry, in an announcement on Monday, condemned the attack on the US Embassy.
"We condemn the throwing of paint by members of the anti-establishment group at the forecourt of the US Embassy in Athens, which resulted in material damage.
“Such actions can't affect the close and longstanding relations of friendship between our peoples and the strategic Greek-US relationship, which is becoming stronger at a very crucial period for our country and the region. The Greek authorities responsible are carrying out all the necessary actions in order to bring the perpetrators to justice." said the Ministry announcement.
From his side, US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt, in a post on his Twitter account on Monday, condemned the Rouvikonas group's attack on the US Embassy in Athens earlier the same day. He also thanked the Greek police for their quick response.
"Kali Xronia! I'm happy to be back in Greece! During the current lapse in US govt appropriations, I'll be less public in my daily work, but I do want to condemn this morning's silly and senseless vandalism at the US Embassy and thank @hellenicpolice for their quick action."
