Chief Admiral Apostolakis appointed Greece’s new Defence Minister

Following Panos Kammenos resignation as defence minister, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Sunday announced that the leadership of Greece's defence ministry will go to the current commander of the armed forces, Hellenic National Defence General Staff chief Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis.

Born in 1957 in Rethymo, Crete and he graduated from the Hellenic Naval Academy in 1980, after which he had an exemplary career as an officer in the Hellenic Navy, rising through the ranks to become a first a member of the HNDGS and then Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff (HNGS) by order of the National Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) on March 7, 2013.

He was later promoted to Admiral and made HNDGS chief by KYSEA on September 15, 2015.

Admiral Apostolakis is married and has two children.
