Melbourne's Greek community out in force to cheer on Tsitsipas

Greek Australians all over Melbourne are getting ready for a big night of tennis, cheering on Greece's tennis sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is set to play his first semi-final in a Grand Slam.

Group viewings are planned all over the city, with many expected to descend on the Greek Centre to cheer Tsitsipas to the final.

President of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GCM) Bill Papastergiadis said that Melbourne’s Greek population is excited to see Tsitsipas take on another tennis great.

“Stefanos has been adopted by the entire Greek community and we are thrilled to be witnessing this young superstar make his mark on the world of tennis. He has a tough challenge tonight, but I know that he has the skill and determination to make it through to Sunday’s final,” said Bill.

“I am looking forward to gathering at the Greek Centre to cheer him on," added Bill.

20-year-old Tsitsipas has enjoyed his best grand slam to date at Melbourne Park this year, beating Roger Federer in the fourth round and then Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in Tuesday's quarterfinal to set up a semi-final showdown with Rafael Nadal on Thursday.
