Mosque in Athens expected to be ready in April

The mosque in Athens, located at the former Central Navy Car Station in Votanikos, is expected to be ready for Muslim prayers by April.

As the Secretary-General of Religions, George Kalantzis, explained to Grek newspaper Elefthero Typo, "Every Friday, the Imam will be at the mosque and on Monday’s and Wednesday’s he will be leading prayers for the Muslim communities.”

“Only those who have a legitimate Muslim household license in Attica or are legal Muslims recognised according to Law 4301/2014 will have the right to attend prayers at the mosque,” said Kalantzis.

The Secretary-General also pointed out that the emphasis of the mosque was on preaching, which can be done only in Greek or as a concession in English.

"What we are interested in is the preaching, prayer which is done in Arabic should be done in Greek or in English, ie the 'linguafranca' of our time ".

The Islamic mosque will operate all hours and days, half an hour before and half an hour after the hour of prayer, while during Ramadan and the Sabbath of Abraham, it will operate 24 hours a day.
