Greece’s President Prokopios Pavlopoulos paid tribute to the Hellenic Cancer Society (HCS) on Monday, praising their work during an event organised jointly by the GCS and the Ministry of Health on the occasion of World Cancer Day.
"On behalf of the Greek state, I have a duty to pay tribute to the mission and the work of the HCS, [...] which, for over 60 years has been standing by all those who suffer," Pavlopoulos said.
He focused particularly on HCS's efforts to promote cancer prevention "through fostering research into the possible causes of cancer and informing the public of these causes."
The President added that an important aspect of this work is the Society's campaign against smoking, especially among young people, and commended Dr Panagiotis Behrakis, Director of the George D. Behrakis Research Lab at the HCS and of the Institute of Public Health at the American College of Greece, for his efforts in this direction; as well as European Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis for providing support on behalf of the EU.
