Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said during a joint press conference with visiting Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, that he expected more cooperation from Greece on the repatriation of eight Turkish servicemen who fled to Greece following a failed coup in 2016.
Tsipras who arrived in Ankara for a two-day visit, said that the issue of the soldiers who fled to Greece is a matter of the judiciary.
Following their meeting before the joint conference, Tsipras reiterated that both sides agreed to de-escalate tension in the Aegean Sea and proceed with confidence building measures, while any differences with Turkey "can and must be solved with dialogue."
When Tsipras was asked why he accepted the invitation from Erdogan, considering the existing tensions, the Greek Prime Minister replied that "regular communication is important to de-escalate tense situations." Erdogan on the same question stated that "politicians should earn friends, not enemies, this is our policy."
