AEK spoiled Flamengo’s party on home court as the Athenians cruised to an 86-70 win to capture their first-ever FIBA Intercontinental Cup!
AEK have added a new piece of silverware to their growing cabinet after the Enosi claimed their first FIBA Intercontinental Cup with an 86-70 defeat of Flamengo on Sunday.
After a win over San Lorenzo in Friday’s semifinal, AEK dispatched a second South American rival as Jordan Theodore’s 22-point showing spoiled Flamengo’s party at the Carioca Arena 1 in Rio de Janeiro.
Aside from Theodore’s MVP performance in Sunday’s final, Jonas Maciulis also enjoyed a solid evening with 17 points while Delroy James added 12 points and 7 rebounds.
Former NBA champion, Anderson Varejao, led the way for the hosts with 21 points as Flamengo struggled to contend with AEK’s depth.
Backed by the home crowd, Flamengo hung around in the first quarter as AEK’s lead was just 20-19 after the first frame.
From the second quarter onwards, however, AEK began to dictate the tempo of the game and the Enosi quickly carved-out a 42-33 lead by halftime.
AEK continued to set the pace in the second half and even though Flamengo tried to cut into the Enosi’s lead, Luca Banchi’s held onto an eight-point lead (63-55) heading into the fourth quarter.
AEK closed out the win with a solid showing in the final frame as the Enosi erupted in celebration at the final buzzer.
