Fire service crew and police authorities are searching for a missing farmer from Chania, Crete, where severe storm weather has grounded flights, damaged highways, and homes, and caused a bridge to collapse.
Authorities on Monday said a 61-year-old man was missing after floodwater swept away his pickup truck south of the port of Chania. Earlier, two women were rescued from nearby buildings damaged by rockslides.
Winds off the west coast of Crete reached 70 kilometers per hour (45 miles per hour) Monday, grounding flights at the island’s Daskalogiannis International Airport. Further inland, floodwater swept away the double-arched stone bridge of Keriti, a local landmark.
Most island ferry services from the mainland were also suspended due to bad weather.
