Greek police confirmed Melbourne’s notorious bikie leader, former Comancheros boss, Amad ‘Jay’ Malkoun as the man who was seriously injured in a car bomb attack that took place outside a gym in Glyfada, Athens.
Malkoun is a convicted drug trafficker who fled overseas several years ago, with reports claiming his car exploded after he tried to switch on the engine of his Mercedes after leaving the gym on Friday morning.
Four other cars were scorched by the explosion and the Greek police bomb squad found residue of an explosive device.
His injuries included burns to his hands and feet and he was taken for immediate surgery to Asklipieio General Hospital in Voula, with doctors saying he is now in a serious but stable condition.
Malkoun, 56, has reportedly been living in Athens’ seaside suburb of Glyfada for the last two years and is believed to have established a gang in Greece in alliance with Russian gang members.
According to eyewitness reports, Malkoun was saved by two young men passing by who opened the burning car door and dragged him out.
Last year, Australian police said he was still an influential figure in the Comancheros, whose associates were involved in a factional war that was playing out on Melbourne’s streets.
In 2015, Malkoun is said to have moved to Dubai, where his family had been living since he resigned as Comanchero president in 2013 and reports claim he moved to Athens two years ago.
Greek police are continuing investigations and there is speculation there may be a link between Malkoun and John Macris, the 46-year-old Greek Australian who was also well known to Australian and Greek police. Macris was shot dead outside his home late last year in Voula, Athens.
