The Athens neighbourhood of Halandri has been left shocked after a 27-year-old father shot his 4-year-old son dead, before turning the gun on himself.

The 27-year-old shot his 4-year-old child with a stolen gun while the young boy was asleep and then ended his own life.

Around 9 am the 21-year-old's wife and mother of the child, who is aged 21, went to the home with her sister, as her spouse was not answering his phone and found them both dead.

The shotgun is said to have been stolen from a house in 2018 from a house in Pallini and reported stolen by its Roma owner.  According to reports, the couple who are also of Roma background, had an explosive argument the night before, however, no note was left behind to explain the reasons for his horrific act.

The tense relationship between the 27-year-old and his wife is said to be the main reason behind the murder-suicide and police also said the man’s mother claims he also had psychological issues.

The couple had been separated for over a year, however, the woman frequently visited her husband and son, who lived with his father.

Police are continuing their investigations into the family tragedy.
