Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is on an official two day visit to China today to participate in the “Belt and Road Initiative Forum II”.
Tsipras, who is accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister George Katrougalos, is scheduled to address the audience on the opening day, Friday 26 April and again Satuday 27 April.
The Belt & Road conference is an initiative by the Chinese government with the objective of inter continental co-operation on trade and investment between China and European and regional partners.
According to diplomatic sources, China’s investment in the Greek port of Piraeus through COSCO is a clear and strategic importance it places in its relationship to Greece and how its sees the country and a trade and commercial conduit between China and Europe.
During his visit, the Greek Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Wang Yang followed by the signing of a new 3-year Memorandum of Co-operation (2020-2022 between the Greek Ministry of Economy and China’s National Committee of Development and Reform.
