For the first time in history, the Hellenic Presidential Guard stood guard in full ceremonial uniform next to the Epitaph during the afternoon Vespers service at St George Church, in Adelaide.
During The Apokathelosis, Good Friday afternoon vespers service, Jesus is taken down from the Cross. As the Priest reads the Gospel, he removes the Body of Christ from the Cross and wraps it in a white sheet before placing it inside the Epitaphio.
The President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopios Pavlopoulos had given permission for the Evzones to participate in full uniform at a Holy Friday service, a world first, allowing the Evzones and parishioners to commemorate Jesus’ death by crucifixion.
