Greek Parliament President and Patriarch in Poland for Holocaust events

The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, President of the Greek Parliament Mr Nikos Voutsis and a delegation of other parliament officials and Greek MPs attended on Thursday the 2019 International March of the Living in Poland, an annual commemorative three-kilometre walk between the former Nazi concentration camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau.

Mr Voutsis also inaugurated the permanent Greek Exhibition at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, which is funded by the Greek parliament with the assistance of the curators of the Jewish Museum of Greece, which provided data and historic explanations.

The town of Kazimierz was where the Nazis gathered Jews of the region before leading them to the Auschwitz concentration camps. The area has since tried to reintroduce Jewish culture in the area, which has attracted visitors due to an annual Jewish Cultural Festival and to Steven Spielberg's decision to film "Schindler's List" in the area.

The International March of the Living is an annual educational program, bringing individuals from around the world to Poland and Israel to study the history of the Holocaust and to examine the roots of prejudice, intolerance and hatred. The walk takes place on Holocaust Remembrance Day as a tribute to all victims of the Holocaust.
