World number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 6-4 in the final of the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid Open.

The Serb broke Tsitsipas’ serve in the second game of the match, which was enough to take the first set by a score of 6-3. Djokovic also only needed one break in the second set, as he broke the Greek’s serve to go up 5-4. He then served the match out, converting on his fourth championship point to win the set 6-4 and capture his third Madrid Open title. This was Djokovic’s first win over Tsitsipas, as the Greek stunned him in their only previous meeting last year in Toronto. This result also put an end to Tsitsipas’ eight-match winning streak.

Despite the loss, Tsitsipas still has a lot to be proud of. After beating two top-four opponents this weekend, he will move up from his current ranking of nine in the world to a new career-high of number seven. Both players were full of praise for each other in their speeches during the trophy presentation, and Djokovic even publicly thanked Tsitsipas in Greek.
