The 15th annual Pride Week for the city of Athens will take place from June 1 to 7, with events scheduled at Syntagma Square and the main Athens Pride 2019 Parade taking place on June 8 at 18:30, organisers at the European Commission's Athens office announced on Wednesday.
According to organisers Pride Week this year will be celebrating both the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City as well as the fatal beating of young Greek LGBTQI+ activist Zak Kostopoulos in central Athens on September 21, 2018.
"All people should be treated the same way, with equal rights and obligations," said George Markopoulotis, head of the European Commission office in Greece in his greeting. He also referred to the 2000 EU directive according to which discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal.
Attica Region Governor Rena Durou said gay rights were "self-evident", and added the region supports Pride Week, while stressing that "stereotypes that can even lead to death" must end.
