Every July 4th sees Greek football supporters around the world celebrate the anniversary of one of the sport’s all-time greatest shocks. Greece’s success at EURO 2004 in Portugal remains the biggest achievement in Greek football history.

Fifteen years on from that amazing night in Lisbon, where Angelos Charisteas’ header gave Greece a 1-0 victory to become European champions, the two teams will contest a rematch. The friendly encounter is set to take place in the Athens neighborhood of Rizoupoli and the Georgios Kamaras Stadium on July 4th. No time has yet been set. That and other details should be forthcoming in the weeks ahead.

The match will almost certainly be played for charitable purposes. That 2004 side now operates under the name of Greek Legends 2004 and have played many games in the last few years benefitting a variety of causes within Greece.

Traianos Dellas posted a photo on his Instagram account showing himself and some of his teammates from that Greek team beginning to train for anniversary match.

AGONAsport will provide updates to the rematch of that epic EURO 2004 encounter in the coming weeks.
