Greek fighter jets flew over the airspace of North Macedonia for the first time ever as reported by the neighbouring country’s media.

The overhead flights were part of NATO operations and fall under the terms of an agreement signed during Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' visit to Skopje in April.

According to the news agency MIA, the flights are part of "the preparation and fulfillment of terms by the Republic of North Macedonia (related to) the air force as an equal member in the collective security system."

The Greek flights' purpose, media said, was to check the adequacy of North Macedonia's airspace surveillance and the compatibility of reconnaissance systems.
