Tsitsipas breezes through to second round of French Open

World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Germany’s Maximilian Marterer in straight sets in the first round of the French Open.

Playing for the first time on Court Philippe Chatrier, the Greek showed no signs of nerves as he took the first two sets 6-2 6-2. The world number 110 put up a better fight in the third set, but Tsitsipas proved too strong, winning the set 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreak) to advance to the second round for the second consecutive year. The 20-year-old from Athens did not face a single break point, and will now face Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien (world number 86) in the second round on Wednesday. The two have never played each other before, and the Bolivian is making his Grand Slam debut in Paris.

29th seeded Maria Sakkari will play her first round match on Tuesday against American Anna Tatishvili. Sakkari, who reached the third round here last year, is the overwhelming favorite to prevail in her first career meeting with Tatishvili.

Valentini Grammatikopoulou’s tournament ended on Friday in the final round of qualifying, as the 22-year-old lost in straight sets to American Varvara Lepchenko, 6-2 6-2.
