Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has called on main Opposition Party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis to live tv debates ahead of the national elections, with Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media Minister Nikos Pappas on Monday noting the importance of a debate in order for the people to "know in detail what is at stake."

Pappas said during a radio interview with News 24/7 that "the policy platforms of the two parties will be put on the table and the people, mostly those that did not consider it important to make a trip to vote, will have to make very crucial decisions."

The minister said that Alexis Tsipras "is open to any model Mitsotakis agrees to discuss" as the ND leader "has made a commitment that ahead of the general elections he will agree to any number of debates".

When people are having a difficult time, he added, "the first person they think to blame is the ruling party" and partly blamed the result on "organisational difficulties" in local elections.

When asked about the possibility that Alexis Tsipras' leadership of SYRIZA might be contested, Pappas said that "Tsipras is the man that took SYRIZA from 3 to 35% and will be SYRIZA leader for many more years."
