Following the announcement by Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to call snap elections, many voices in Europe are rushing to caution over the Prespes Agreement, starting with Germany’s Deputy Foreign Minister on Monday.

German Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Roth said that the Prespes Agreement is a historic foreign policy success of the Greek government and should be respected by all subsequent governments.

Roth made the comments during a briefing with foreign correspondents at the ministry, adding that the agreement has brought stability in the area.

“We firmly believe that any government to follow in Greece shall face up to its own responsibility towards peace, reconciliation and stability in the area," he said, clarifying that his optimism was in no way tied to any particular future electoral outcome in the country.
