Kostas Bakoyannis has been elected as the new Mayor of Athens, as the son of former mayor Dora Bakoyannis and nephew of opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, won with over 65% of the vote against a candidate backed by the ruling left-wing Syriza.
With 93.43 of the votes counted, Bakoyannis received over 65 percent followed by Nassos Iliopoulos that received 34.77 percent.
Bakoyiannnis was supported by New Democracy and Nassos Iliopoulos by SYRIZA.
After his win, Bakoyannis said, "we will put all our might for an Athens that unites us, that brings us closer," addressing supporters at his electoral pavilion on Sunday night.
Bakoyannis thanked the citizens of Athens for their trust and the honour and reassured them that "we will work day and night" and we will fight all the battles together.
In front of the large crowds that gathered at Syntagma Square to celebrate Bakoyannis victory, the new Mayor said, “Enough talking, now it’s time to work hard and make a difference.”
