The first Muslim mosque to open for worship in the Greek capital is set to officially open its doors in Votanikos today, Friday, June 7.

After numerous delays, the mosque will be launched at lunchtime with an event hosted by Greece’s Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, with Minister Costas Gavroglou in attendance.

According to Kathimerini, although it is opening today, there will not be any prayer services held yet as an Islamic administrative committee, who will organise the services have not yet been appointed.

Unlike most traditional mosques, this will have no minarets or loudspeakers and is said to fit up to 300 men and 50 women.

The Islamic mosque will operate all hours and days, half an hour before and half an hour after the hour of prayer, while during Ramadan and the Sabbath of Abraham, it will operate 24 hours a day.
