Large wildfire blazes through forest area of Peloponnese

Greek authorities say dozens of firefighters are trying to contain a large wildfire that is blazing through a forested area in Greece’s Kato Achaea region in the northwestern part of the Peloponnese.

The fire service said the wildfire, which is not directly threatening inhabited areas, broke out early Monday afternoon at around 1:30pm local time in an area covered with low vegetation and cultivated land. The cause isn’t yet known.

It is Greece’s first major forest fire of the summer.

The fire service says 40 firefighters, two water-dropping aircraft and 15 fire engines were deployed and they are still trying to contain the blaze.
