At least seven people, including two children, have drowned after a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized off the Greek coast.

The boat arriving from the Turkish coast overturned near Lesvos, leaving two children, four women and one man dead.

A Greek coastguard said another 57 people were saved following a search and rescue operation.

There has been no information about how the boat capsized, and the coastguard did not provide further details on the incident or the nationality of the refugees and migrants.

Greece has become one of the main gateways for migrants coming into Europe in recent years, with many of them fleeing countries including Syria and Afghanistan, with many attempting to cross the Aegean Sea from Turkey, which is often hit by bad weather.
