America’s new Archbishop Elpidophoros enthroned in New York

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America was enthroned as the seventh Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America on Saturday, June 22, at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan, on 337 East 74th Street in New York City.

Archbishop Elpidophoros was elected unanimously by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople, on May 11, 2019.

The Enthronement of Archbishop Elpidophoros attracted worldwide interest and was attended by hierarchs from the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops; dignitaries from the political, diplomatic, academic and business world; religious leaders, community and organization representatives; and clergy and laity from around the country and around the world.

The ceremony was officiated by the Metropolitan of Germany Augoustinos, representing the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Representatives of many faiths and Orthodox churches attended, including the Churches of Greece and Cyprus, while the Greek government was represented by Foreign Minister George Katrougalos.

The heads of the diplomatic missions of Greece, Cyprus, Turkey in the United States and the United Nations were among those attending, while main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis was represented by his spouse, Mareva.
