Greek authorities have confirmed that missing American scientist, Suzanne Eaton who has been missing since last Tuesday, has been found dead inside a cave.

The 59-year-old molecular biologist from the Max Planck Institute at Dresden University, Germany, was attending the Orthodox Academy in Chania when she was reported missing last Tuesday, July 2nd.

According to reports, the body of the missing scientist was found inside a cave near the settlement of Xamoudochori, in Chania, about 10 kilometres from where Suzanne Eaton was last seen.

It is believed that Suzanne had gone for a run when she went missing, according to a Facebook page called "Searching for Suzanne" which was set up by her family. All of her belongings were found in her room including her passport, wallet, phone and cash.

"Due to the rough terrain and extreme heat, we believe the most likely possibility is that Suzanne may have either become overheated and looked for shade or that she may have fallen," a statement on the Facebook page reads.
