Earthquake with a Magnitude of 5.3 felt in the Greek capital of Athens

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 has been felt in the Greek capital of Athens.

A second tremor has also being felt with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale.

According to reports, the epicentre of the earthquake was located 23 kilometres northwest of Athens.

A series of aftershocks have also been felt, with the strongest being 3.5 on the Richter scale.

An eyewitness told GCT that the quake which occurred shortly before 2:13pm on Friday lasted for about 10 seconds, and felt pretty big as it shook the entire apartment building he was in.

It is reported that some areas are experiencing communication and power outages.

There have been no immediate reports of injuries.

Fire services have stated that they have received numerous  calls about people being trapped in lifts, which they are attending to.
