Athenians leave the city to begin their Summer holiday for 2019

Ports across Athens were packed today as locals are leaving the capital city to head for their summer holiday on the islands, ahead of Greece’s much anticipated Orthodox holiday “The Dormition of the Theotokou” which takes place on August 15.

From the morning the port of Piraeus is packed, while in the surrounding streets there are massive traffic jams trying to enter the port. In some cases, passengers make it just a few minutes before their ferry is about to leave.

Those who are planning on travelling over the next week should be one hour earlier at the port, due to increased traffic on the roads.

From the port of Piraeus, today ferries departed, 16 from Rafina (10 for the Cyclades and 6 for Marmari) and 7 from Lavrion. Yesterday, Thursday, 25th of July 25 ferries sailed from Piraeus, while 23,070 passengers and 3,554 private vehicles left for various Aegean islands. From Rafina, 12 ferry boats departed, carrying 6,432 passengers and 1,190 vehicles. From Lavrio 5 sailing ships left, while 1,176 passengers and 313 vehicles left.
