Galissa in Syros has become the first beach in Greece to have a lifesaving automatic external defibrillator (AED) on-site. This particular beach, which is the largest on the island and the most organised in terms of equipment and facilities, has now launched its own defibrillator, which was placed at a special point at the central entrance of the beach and is accessible to the public.
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can potentially stop an irregular heart beat and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest.
The defibrillator at Galissa has paediatric and adult electrodes, alarms and a GPS tracker, and can be operated by a doctor, lifeguard or anyone who has first aid knowledge and is trained to use a defibrillator.
In addition to the defibrillator, Galissa Beach also accommodates people with mobility issues as it has a 350-meter corridor that allows access to the sea.
Also, most of the beach is accessible for people with disabilities and offers parking for disabled guests, WC for disabled people, handicapped wheelchairs and disabled umbrellas.
