Greek tennis superstar Maria Sakkari has made it into the quarter-final of the 2019 WTA Cincinnati Masters and will take on the second-ranked player in the world, Ashleigh Barty from Australia.
Sakkari beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-7(4) 6-4 6-4 on a hot and humid day and after losing the first set, the in-form Greek player battled back to beat ninth seed Sabalenka on the Ohio hardcourts.
Sakkari saw five set points slip away in the first set but Sakkari continued to fight and took the match after two and a half hours of play.
Her Australian opponent Barty overcame 49 unforced errors and a huge challenge from Anett Kontaveit to reach the quarter-finals with a 4-6 7-5 7-5 win in the Cincinnati Masters on Thursday.
